about globemedFounded in 2007, the GlobeMed network engages 2,000 undergraduates at 56 university-based chapters throughout the U.S. GlobeMed partners university students with grassroots organizations around the world that are actively improving the health of their local communities. Year after year, these students and grassroots leaders collaborate on projects that deepen and expand the organization's impact.
Throughout the year, GlobeMed chapters strengthen long-term partnerships through frequent communication, raise funds through innovative initiatives for health projects that help partner organizations achieve their mission, educate students about global health issues through a signature global health education and leadership development curriculum, and intern on-site with partner organizations. |

OUR PARTNER. Our chapter at the University of Rochester is partnered with the Social Organization for Voluntary Action (SOVA) based in Odisha, India. In the summer, several of our members travel to Odisha and participate in the Grassroots Onsite Work (GROW) internship. With a commitment to improved global health, our fundrasing campaigns seek to mobilize resources for SOVA during our annual date auction and benefit dinner.
UNIVERSITY OF ROCHESTER CAMPUS. We meet weekly for interactive globalhealthU discussions, the educational component of GlobeMed. By hosting discussions, we hope to stimulate thought and socratic discourse where students can question global health theory and analyze its real world applications.
ROCHESTER, NY. Investment begins with human relationships. By volunteering with organizations, schools, and businesses in the Rochester area, we explore our city through personal involvement. Community building is a concerted effort to strengthen relationships between our members and the greater Rochester area beyond campus.
grow
The Grassroots On-site Work (GROW) internship aims to strengthen the relationship between students and their grassroots partner organizations. Every year, 3-5 students from each chapter intern on the ground for 3-8 weeks with their partner organization. With over 260 students nationwide participating since 2007, GROW has had profound impact on the development of the relationship between GlobeMed chapters and their community partners.
Since 2015, University of Rochester's chapter of GlobeMed has been working closely with the Healthcare Duty Assistant Training program created by SOVA . This program aims to educate local youth through hands-on career training. This program takes place at the Srimula Public Health Center where 30 young trainees, ages 14-22, are given medical instruction over a 3-month period. As the assistants begin their work in the rural regions of Dhenkanal and Angul, the outcome of stable employment opportunities and increased quality health service for the region creates long-term benefits reaching far beyond the training process. |
GROW has three goals:
1. To strengthen and expand the programs, resources, and knowledge of partner organizations to increase their capacity for impact. 2. To engage in mutual learning to strengthen all aspects of the partnership 3. To evaluate progress and plan for the year ahead in order to support long-term stability of the partnership. |
